Named after the Buddha’s birthplace in Nepal, Lumphini Park was conceived by Rama VI and intended as the site of a national exhibition, but plans fell through after his death. A statue of the king at the Silom Rd corner of the park continues to honour the memory of its nature-loving creator. Even though Lumphini Park has lost some of its perimeter to carparks and even a number of ugly buildings, it remains the largest single public green space in the city. It has two boating lakes, islands (some with quaint bridges), as well as several pagodas and pavilions, one of which was built to commemorate King Rama IX’s 72nd birthday.
This canal is an important arterial route and is one of only two major east-west canals that survive in Bangkok. It is a continuation of Khlong Mahanak and runs east through an area of marshland where Rama I banished the Muslim prisoners he captured during one of his southern campaigns — their descendants still live in an enclave on the north bank of the canal, roughly opposite Jim Thompson’s House. The Prathunam district takes its name, which means ‘water gate’, from the canal lock that used to be located here.
